Colosseum

Tour the Colosseum in Rome, Italy

Just east of the Roman Forum looms an impressive man-made structure and the most visited attraction in Italy: the mighty Colosseum. This ancient arena holds the title of being the largest ampitheater ever built in the Roman Empire and is a prominent reminder of the incredible history and achievements of Ancient Rome. Originally built during the Flavian Dynasty and completed in 80 A.D. during the rule of Emperor Titus, this arena could holdnearly 80,000 spectators in its prime. It also boasted a multitude of modern features including trap doors to hold wild animals, elevators, and well-organized exits.

The age of gladiators fighting to the death for public entertainment came to an end in the 6th century A.D., and the arena became a quarry for various building projects in the city before being favored by the Pope for it to become a sacred Christian site. It is uncertain if Christian martyrs were publicly tortured and killed within the Colosseum walls ordered by Roman Emperors, but there has been much speculation. By the 20th century, the Colosseum has endured earthquakes, lightning strikes, fires, vandalism, neglect, and war. Nearly two-thirds of the original Colosseum has been destroyed throughout history, including many decorative marble elements and of course the wooden flooring of the arena, but the surviving structure remains a symbol of Rome and one of the most interesting historical sites in the world.
