Tower Bridge

The Tower Bridge stands tall across the River Thames, marking the east end of central London. The project of the bridge began in the 1870’s when the city was looking for a solution to allow ships in and out of central London. Officially opened in 1894, it boasted an impressive steam-based hydraulic system which lifts the lower level up to allow ships to pass. The bridge uses electric hydraulics today, and it played a major role in the 2012 London Olympics.
