The 10 Heartiest French Dishes To Get You Through Winter

Ah, France! You really are the country of fine dining, and there’s no better country to be in during the winter when it comes to good food. You might have thought that sightseeing would be the most exciting part of your day, but actually it’s the menu that awaits you when you troop in out of the cold. Here are our top suggestions for food that will warm you from the inside out!

For starters, you can’t come to France and not try escargots (snails) cooked in a delicious garlic butter, with more than one slice of warm fresh bread to soak up the sauce!

Vegetarians, you should go straight for a soupe à l’onion (onion soup) with a top layer of bread and melted cheese to get your taste buds going.

For the main, there are specialties from every region to try. Our favorites are boeuf bourguignon (beef stew) and coq au vin (chicken in red wine) from the Burgundy area, fondue (melted cheese and white wine into which you dip bread) and tartiflette (a potato gratin with cheese, cream and pork) from the Rhône Alps, and the dish made famous by Disney, ratatouille (a vegetable stew) from Provence.

For dessert, your mouth will water over a fondant au chocolat (hot chocolate cake with melted chocolate inside) or/and a tarte tatin (a caramelized apple tart.)

Too busy sightseeing to stop for a sit-down dinner? Don’t worry! French crêpes are the perfect hand-warmer. We recommend jambon oeuf fromage (ham, egg and cheese), or for those sweet-toothed tourists, Nutella and banana. YUM!

Bon appetit!
