Paris on a Budget: Cheap Hotels and Hostels

Summer is undeniably one of the best times to visit Paris – the clouds finally clear away, there are activities and festivals galore, and the city empties out of its locals to leave you with more space to roam. But traveling here during prime vacation time doesn’t come cheap, and the biggest expense – apart from your airline ticket – will most likely be accommodation. Here is a list of options for staying in Paris on a budget.

St. Christopher’s Inns – Canal

This backpacker’s hostel is a favorite for young, hip travelers in Paris. Just a few metro stops away from the Gare du Nord train station – a major hub connecting dozens of cities to the French capital – this hostel has a friendly, international ambiance. The lively bar and internet café on the main floor create a fun vibe, and the Canal Saint Martin wrapping around the hostel is the place to be in Paris in the summer. Tons of activities are at your disposal during the warmer months – boat and petanque rental, outdoor dancing, food and drinks, and plenty of space to set up a picnic along the water.

The 3 Ducks Hostel

Whatever you’re looking for in a hostel, the 3 Ducks probably has it: free Wifi, air-conditioning, a multilingual staff, a bar, and a selection of rooms for 4, 6 or 8 people. Come alone or with friends – in either case, you’ll appreciate the friendly atmosphere here and the staff’s willingness to accommodate your needs. The stylish, art deco rooms add a touch of class to what could otherwise be an ordinary backpacker’s hideout. A spacious terrace adds the final touch.

Absolute Budget Hotel

One of the best parts about this low-cost accommodation is its location, situated just in front of the happening Canal Saint Martin. Decoration in the rooms is hit or miss, but each room comes with an ensuite bathroom – a relative rarity in Paris budget hotels. Choose between single, twin, triple or “multiple” rooms. Take advantage of the trendy surrounding neighborhood and make a night of it – the hotel front desk is open all night long.

If design is important to you, you’ll appreciate the efforts the Oops hotel has made to be pleasing to the eye. Lime green or rainbow-swirled walls cover this modest hotel, located near the Latin quarter. Walk five minutes and you’ll be on Rue Mouffetard, a lively street with cute shops and much of the city’s student crowd. Back at the hotel, you’ll get free breakfast, plus essential services like free internet, maps and linens, air-conditioning and a self-service kitchen if you want to cook for yourself.
