The annual Techno Parade, celebrating electronic music, has been roaring through the streets of Paris for the last 15 years. It’s at once a festive parade, massive concert and bumping nightclub, and the sheer scale of it is something you just can’t miss. Organizers are expecting some 300,000 people to join in the all-afternoon dance party on the 13th, and the only thing missing is you.
This year, the Vietnamese electro scene gets special attention, with three Vietnamese groups – DJ Jin, Slo-Lo and DJ Jase – joining Franco-Vietnamese artists Tha Trickaz, DJ Yellow and Nick V. French group Dirtyphonics will act as a sort of musical elder to the festival.
Even if you’re not a fan of techno music, the event is still well worth attending. The Techno Parade is not just a music event but also a celebration of diversity and an attempt to reappropriate the public sphere.
The event first began as a protest against government repression of electronic music in the early 1990s, and subsequent Techno Parades have held onto a certain feistiness. Every year, some revelers use the space to diffuse political messages and get the attention of the media and the government.
The parade takes a different route each year through the streets of Paris. This year’s event starts at Nation at noon before weaving through the city, past the Place de la Bastille and Republique.
If you want to continue the party after the afternoon music parade, you’re in luck. Techno Parade festivities go on into the night with “Dream Nation” at the Docks of Paris. Here, more than 30 artists from around the world will come together to keep you dancing into the wee hours.
