Ok, so the days are getting shorter over here in France, and the temperature is starting to drop. But Autumn is a great time to visit Paris if you enjoy crisp sunshine, prefer to avoid the tourists and enjoy a good dose of culture. Because Fall is such a great season for making the most of the city’s art exhibitions, we’ve put together our top four autumnal ‘must-sees’…
Everybody is talking about the Frida Kahlo / Diego Rivera exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie (October 9 – January 13) called ‘L’Art en fusion’. The legendary couple, who married, divorced and then married again, have both produced some truly amazing artwork. If you’re interested in two of the most influential Mexican artists of the 20th century, then this exhibition (or “expo” as they say in France) needs to be on your list, if it isn’t already!
Have you been to visit the Grand Palais at the bottom of the Champs Elysées? Not only is the place absolutely breathtaking, but this Fall (September 18 – January 6) they are showing over 200 pieces by the Cubist initiator Georges Braque for the first time since 1973. Definitely not one to miss.
The exhibition “The Renaissance and the Dream” (October 9 – January 26) is on at the Luxembourg Musuem. With around eighty pieces by celebrated artists such as Hieronymus Bosch, Veronese, Gréco, Dürer and Correggio, the exhibition explores the representation of sleep, dreaming and awakenings in Renaissance art.
If you prefer a bit of pop to your art, head over to the Pompidou Center and check out the postmodernist artist Roy Lichtenstein’s exhibition (July 3 – November 4 2013.) It’s proved so popular that opening times have been extended to 11p.m. If you miss Roy, don’t worry, the Pompidou Center has got even more up its sleeve – they’re showing an exhibition on Surrealism from October 30 – March 3 which won’t disappoint.
