Checkpoint Charlie
One of Berlin’s last remnants of the Cold War, this former border crossing has been maintained for visitors to see and experience life during a divided Berlin. The name ‘Charlie’ comes from the NATO alphabet; Charlie was the third checkpoint to be opened after Alpha and Bravo.
Having been the scene of a major confrontation in 1961, the tensions at Checkpoint Charlie were heightened throughout the remainder of the ColdWar.
