Berlin Wall

Berlin Wall (Berliner Mauer)

Built in one night, the Berlin Wall encircled the city of West Berlin for 96km, cutting of access between East and West for nearly three decades. Constructed under the orders of the East German government, on August 13, 1961, the Wall cut thousands of Berliners off from one another, and became one of the defining symbols of the Cold War.

Now, only few traces of the Wall remain as a reminder of the once-divided city. You can see what remains of the Berlin Wall at the East Side Gallery, the Berlin Wall Memorial, or in front of the Topography of Terror.
