While Genoa is known for steep hills and narrow medieval alleyways, coastal routes like Corso Italia offer flat, comfortable cycling paths. The city has steadily expanded bike lanes, and riders tackling the hills often prefer electric bikes to handle elevation changes comfortably.
Spring and autumn provide the most pleasant cycling weather, featuring mild temperatures and comfortable coastal breezes. Summers can be warm and busy with seaside visitors, while winters remain relatively mild despite occasional rainfall.
Most guided routes explore coastal highlights such as Porto Antico, Corso Italia, and the historic village of Boccadasse. Some itineraries also pass central cultural squares like Piazza De Ferrari and historic thoroughfares near the Old Port.
If you plan to cycle only along the flat waterfront promenade of Corso Italia, a traditional bike is completely fine. However, an e-bike is strongly recommended for exploring the city center or climbing up into the scenic hills overlooking the gulf.
Waterfront routes and promenade rides are well suited for beginners and families because they stay on flat ground separated from major traffic. Exploring the hilly neighborhoods or busier inner streets is better suited for confident riders.
