Moshi features a mix of paved town roads and rugged dirt tracks that climb into the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Town cycling is relatively flat, but rural routes frequently encounter gravel trails, red clay paths, and steep inclines.
The dry seasons from June to October and January to February offer optimal conditions with dry tracks and clear views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The heavy rains from March to May can make unpaved trails muddy and difficult to navigate.
Most local itineraries cover the Rau Forest Reserve, local coffee and banana farms in the foothills, and historic viewpoints around town. Longer excursions pedal further afield toward the Chemka Hot Springs or Lake Chala.
A regular mountain bike is suitable for flatter rides around town and nearby plains like Chemka. An e-bike provides pedal assistance that makes climbing the steep elevation gains up Kilimanjaro's volcanic foothills much more manageable.
Yes, gentle itineraries through Rau Forest or the plains south of town are well-suited for families and novice cyclists. Steeper routes into the mountain villages are better reserved for riders with solid fitness or those utilizing e-bikes.
