Good to know
La Paz features steep, high-altitude terrain and busy urban traffic, making general downtown commuting challenging for casual cyclists. However, quieter neighborhoods in the lower southern valleys and world-class mountain routes outside the city offer fantastic cycling conditions.
The dry winter season from May to October is the ideal time to cycle in and around La Paz. These months bring clear skies, dry trails, and minimal rainfall, ensuring safer conditions on mountain passes.
Most regional excursions focus on the famous downhill descent along the North Yungas Road, commonly called Death Road. Urban and valley rides often highlight scenic destinations such as Valle de la Luna, Mirador Killi Killi, and historic central plazas.
An e-bike is strongly recommended for exploring the city streets because the high altitude and severe inclines require significant physical exertion. For rugged downhill trails outside the city, full-suspension regular mountain bikes are standard.
Steep city streets and high-speed downhill mountain routes require confidence and are generally not recommended for young children or complete beginners. Families and novices can instead look for gentler recreational rides in the flatter parks of the Zona Sur.
