Galle är den administrativa huvudstaden i södra provinsen och den fjärde största staden i Sri Lanka. Före portugisernas ankomst på 1500-talet var Galle öns viktigaste hamn och nådde höjden av sin utveckling på 1700-talet under den holländska kolonialperioden. Galle är det bästa exemplet på en befäst stad byggd av portugiserna i Syd- och Sydostasien som visar interaktionen mellan portugisiska arkitektoniska stilar och inhemska traditioner. Galle Fort är ett världsarv och är den största kvarvarande fästningen i Asien byggd av europeiska ockupanter.
