Galle è la capitale amministrativa della Provincia del Sud e la quarta città più grande dello Sri Lanka. Prima dell'arrivo dei portoghesi nel XVI secolo, Galle era il porto principale dell'isola e ha raggiunto l'apice del suo sviluppo nel XVIII secolo durante il periodo coloniale olandese.
