The historic village centers are pedestrianized and closed to bicycle traffic, but the surrounding hills feature scenic paved roads and gravel trails. The terrain is exceptionally hilly and mountainous, rewarding riders with panoramic vistas along elevated ridge routes.
Spring and early autumn, particularly from April to June and September to October, offer pleasant temperatures and lighter road traffic. Midsummer can bring intense heat and sun exposure, while winter months see cooler winds and frequent rain.
Most cycling routes navigate the high ridgelines above the villages, stopping at vantage points like the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Soviore and the village of Volastra. Many tours also explore the flat, converted railway path connecting nearby Levanto, Bonassola, and Framura.
An e-bike is strongly recommended for most cyclists due to the continuous and steep elevation changes across the coastal hills. Standard road or mountain bikes are generally best reserved for experienced riders with high fitness levels who welcome demanding climbs.
The steep and narrow hillside roads above Cinque Terre can be challenging for novices and young children. However, beginners and families can comfortably ride the flat, paved, and car-free Maremonti coastal trail that connects Levanto to Framura just north of the villages.
