Berlin Preps for the 25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

This November 9th will mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.  Already now news articles about the pending celebrations are starting to make headlines.  Impressive searches through photo archives are also bringing to light extraordinary photographs depicting life on both sides of the formerly divided city.

Our favorite photo archive so far is this one here from the Tagesspiegel:

Many of the great images have descriptions showing exactly from where they were taken and what stands there now.  The amount of change in the past 25 years is impressive, but of course the work’s not done yet.  For good measure, there’s even one image of Sly Stallone visiting the Wall thrown in.

For the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the celebrations were topped off with 1000 giant Wall-sized foam dominos being knocked down on a stretch along the Brandenburg Gate where the Wall once stood.  Guests of honor included Nelson Mandela, Lech Wasela, Vaclav Havel, Angela Merkel, Mikhail Gorbachev, Hillary Clinton, Dmitry Medvedev, and Helmut Kohl, among many others.  Performances ranged from Bon Jovi to Beethoven’s classics.  That celebration, even with its gloomy misty rain, will be a tough act to follow.  As the celebration details become clear, we’ll keep you posted.
